Artist Statement:

I was born and raised in Harlem and this piece depicts a Sat. afternoon on 125th street circa 1957. It shows how I remember/imagine Blumstein's a big department store across and down from the Apollo. The photos are from my mother's collection, most of them taken at Grant's, another dept store next to Blumsteins and the penny arcade which used to be next door to the Victoria movie house. We only had black and white in those days but for a fee, you could have the photos hand colored. The tags reveal things I remember like 15 cent subway fare, camping out in Morningside Park, etc.
