Artist Statement:

These three pieces comprise part of a series inspired on a particularly glorious, early spring day as I walked through el Barrio to my painting studio on 107th Street.  The relief of color and sound breaking winter's gray hush was undeniable.  Energized, I bounded up the stairs of my 5th-floor walk-up to confront the blank canvases that stood ready and waiting after days of preparation.  As I began to paint, I soon discovered my palette and dancing stroke unconsciously reflected the celebratory air permeating the neighborhood - everything from the blue sky to children's delighted squeals to the smiling faces of old men warmed by the sun as they returned with tinny boombox to their seasonal haunt. These paintings are my voice added to the mix - my celebration coupled with the children's laughter, the old men's banter.
